The typical pet microchip is an RFID silicon based microchip, typically encased in sterile glass, about the same size as a large grain of rice. They are generally passive RFID, meaning they have no battery - the power that causes them to transmit their stored ID data comes from the reader which generates a strong enough radio wave of the correct frequency to energize the chip’s transmission circuitry. When stimulated with the right radio frequency these chips transmit their data as a very weak radio signal and the reader has to be quite close to pick up the signal.
